“Jiska yha aake bhi nahi hua, uska toh kabhi hona hi nahi tha”
Translated, “One who couldn't make it from here, was never meant to make it”
Just yesterday my roomie told me about this web series. Hearing this dialogue from him, I was compelled to view the episode. Not because this dialogue is very interesting or true, rather it being so damn untrue. I’ve studied both at Allen Kota as well as FIITJEE Bhopal, so I can really compare it to its zenith. Let us see.
I joined Allen Kota right after class ten, so called their “Nurture” course. During these years, I made a very deep analysis of how the system actually works. The system is pretty same in all the biggies i.e. Allen, Resonance, Vibrant and Bansal. A few newer institutes like Nucleus were setup later, so we won’t be discussing them.
Now, what actually is happening in this so called Kota Factory? Lets discuss the selection ratio of JEE Advanced , as I saw in the Enthusiast Course (Class twelfth). I can recall, there were around fifteen batches in total for class twelfth. I had friends in almost every batch. I will call it a meaningful selection if a General category student obtains an all India rank less than eight thousand in JEE Advanced and equivalent in other categories. (Infact, do you know that more than half of the students getting a rank beyond five thousand take a drop in kota? Yes, their selection is counted twice!). The “actual” data, which isn't discussed beyond the result department of the institute was somewhat like:
BATCH - STRENGTH - SELECTED
- A*(star) - 45 - 42
- A1 - 70 - 50
- A2 -110 - 30
- A3 - 160 - 10
- A4 - 180 - 5
- A5 - 210 - 2
- A6 - 210 - 1
.
.
. - Fifteenth Batch - 210 - 0
(Average numbers, not exact)
Total selected roughly was like 140 or less out of the total 2800 enrolled in the course. The selection percentage comes out to be approximately 5% and individually tends to zero as we move down the batches. Now, here’s the catch. The star batch, which amounts to 30% of the total selections is a very dynamic batch. A large number of the students of this batch are purchased from other coaching institutes of different cities who are entirely dependent on self study. You would be astonished to know the working of this buying process. When the coaching gets to know of any student performing exceptionally well anywhere in India, they send an Agent to the student’s house who lures the student’s parents of zero tuition fee, free accommodation and lacs of incentives. An ideal example of this was Chitraang Murdia, the AIR 1 of 2014 who was awarded 21 lac in front end and crores behind the stage. That physics prodigy never needed any kind of coaching.
Anyways, you’d be like still there’s a lot of selections in the top two batches..? You’re right, there are. But, these students are like, coaching doesn’t really play a big role in their preparations. Had they been in any notsofamous coaching, still the’d crack the nuts with minor rank fluctuation. These are truly laborious and hardworking students.
A coaching is a good coaching if it can get large number of students selected from the batches A2 to A5. which rarely happens in Kota. Which is why I can boldly call all of them trash cans, wasting your money, time and future. Kota factory hides the actual ‘percentage selection by classroom’ data and boast themselves on the basis of the top ranks, which is a logically useless data for any student.
Should you really go to Kota then?Yes, you should. Kota isn’t all about JEE, NEET and selections. Its a zone of time which will teach you more than all of what you are going to learn the rest of your life. Imagine all you have is a five hundred rupee note in your pocket and all of a sudden demonetisation is imposed. You use the most popular phone of Kota - Samsung Guru and hence barred from digital wallets. I have vivid memories how students bunked classes standing in an ATM queue at 5AM just to get a few bucks out of the doomed machine which ran out of cash by 8AM. You create your own problems and fight them on your own. You learn something new each day you spend in Kota. Besides this, you meet some real great people, i.e. your teachers. Especially if you are in a good batch, you will be mentored by people who have immense experience of how this world works. They will make you a smart & successful person as well a good human being. A smart guy may not crack JEE, but will kiss the success at the very end.
But what about the selection?I’m no mentor of any kind, but there’s something I observed at FIITJEE Bhopal. For instance, take the example of dropper batches (thirteenth, in Kotian dictionary). I saw a higher percentage of selection at FIITJEE droppers batches compared to Allen dropper batches. The difference was in the way students prepared at both the places. Students at Allen relied mostly on the official Allen material provided over the counter by the coaching. At FIITJEE, students solved more and more number of books. Books here refers to the books by great writers like HCV for physics. You do entire HCV and no student from any coaching solving any material can beat you. Even the material of FIITJEE was a hybrid of all the Kota coaching materials, but students paid an equal focus on books. A friend of mine solved so many books that he could remember the answers of many questions directly in each paper of the internal test series. He joined IIT Delhi later. So, I believe solving more and more number of books is very very important and you should lay your emphasis on that.
Hence, as far as TVF_Kota_Factory is concerned, a few facts presented in the series are true only from a common man's perspective. But most of the other facts are true, and hence is an enjoyable piece to watch. Feel the nostalgia.
Thank you for reading!
